Brooke Johnston enters Bollywood
The lanky blonde will be seen acting in actor-director Puneet Issar’s film “Nishchay Kar Apni Jeet Karoon” (Determined, I get triumphant). The movie will have Brooke pairing with a new Sikh actor Gulzar Chahal. Bollywood actress Tulip Joshi also plays an important role in the film.
Speaking about the circumstances in which she signed the film, Brooke told a news agency: “I
met Puneet (Issar) through some friends in the US. He told me about the film and I liked its concept. I also liked the idea of coming to India. Bollywood tempted me to pick up this assignment. It looks like there is scope.”
Brooke is learnt to be honing her Hindi diction nowadays.
In the past, Brooke has worked in several TV shows and has also campaigned for PETA. In 2006, she posed in a skimpy bikini made of lettuce leaves.
Brooke is a thorough vegetarian. She stopped eating meat at age 14 when she learned about how animals suffer in factory farms.
Movie review: Luck By Chance
Luck, they say, is an important factor in the film industry. But talent is equally important. Thoughtfully, Zoya Akhtar doesn’t rely on plain chance in her directorial debut but exhibits immense aptitude while largely highlighting the significance of fate in films.
Luck By Chance is the story of an aspiring actor Vikram (Farhan Akhtar) who comes from Delhi to Mumbai to make it big in films. Sona Mishra (Konkona Sen Sharma) has been struggling for more than a couple of years in B-grade cinema and wants to switch to more meaty roles.
Meanwhile film producer Rommy Rolly (Rishi Kapoor) announces a new project starring popular film-star Zafar Khan (Hrithik Roshan) alongside Nikki (Isha Sharvani), daughter of yesteryear actress Neena Walia (Dimple Kapadia).
Zafar’s exit from the project is Vikram’s entry ticket to Bollywood. Luck shines bright on him as he is short-listed for Rolly’s film and selected to play the male lead. But as he gains professional fame, his personal life goes for a toss with a failed relationship with girlfriend Sona.
The uniqueness of Luck By Chance is the cheeky spoofs it attempts on the functioning of the film industry without exaggerating the outcome (like in Nagesh Kukunoor’s Bollywood Calling ). Luck By Chance has some of the best employed cameos which are not just stuffed in for star-value but go in sync with the script. Zoya manages to pull off satire on several actors who make you laugh at their own expense (notably Mac Mohan, Sanjay Kapoor and Anurag Kashyup). Also the film-in-film setting gives ample scope for several parody pieces on Bollywood clichés.
While Bollywood is essentially employed as the backdrop of the film, it doesn’t form the backbone, with the protagonist’s character-graph taking prominence. It starts with Vikram’s self-assured struggle to get into movies, progresses with his ethical corruption resulting from fame and culminates with his remorse. However, with the rejection of his repentance, the film opts for an abrupt climax where the protagonist suddenly switches from Vikram to Sona. The movie culminates on a pragmatic note much in the Madhur Bhandarkar mould, though it evades such treatment through its run by not getting hard-hitting heavy or regressively realistic.
Nevertheless, Zoya Akhtar comes up with a taut screenplay comprising of some amusingly comic-but-credible characters. The twist in the interval point is especially noteworthy where Sona loses her chance and Vikram gets lucky. The treatment continuously alternates between humour to reality bytes but at no moment gets slapstick. The narrative even covers external factors affecting the film industry comprising of acting schools, drama-theatre, corporate studios to media houses and has interesting anecdotes on each.
Anand Subaya’s editing is crisp and he makes good use of montage mixture at several instances. The production design (Anuradha Parikh) and the costumes (Arjun Bhasin, Aparna Chandra) impart a perfect Bollywood feel to the film. The imaginatively shot opening credit song deserves a special mention for paying tribute to every uncelebrated craftsman involved in the making of a movie. Right at the onset, it defines and sets a perfect mood for the film. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s musical score is engaging though a couple of songs in the second half were clearly avoidable.
Almost every character in the film has grey shades though not glorified to extreme extents. The movie reveals the double standards of industry people though not showing them in an outright negative light. The trivial scene where Hrithik as superstar Zafar is separated from the external world by his car’s glass window is a subtle metaphor for the confinements of stardom. The pre-interval confrontation between Farhan and his friends is another effective scene.
Zoya Akhtar succeeds in extracting perfect performances from each and every member of the cast. And if you think Isha Sharvani can’t act, she is used in the film to that effect. She is not supposed to act but simply look beautiful, which she does. Farhan Akhtar comes up with a natural and confident act and glides effortlessly through his role. Konkona Sen Sharma is as dependable as always and stands tall throughout the film. Rishi Kapoor gets the looks and mannerisms of his Bollywood producer character correct and is exceptionally hilarious. Dimple Kapadia is impressive as a yesteryear actress and the doting mother of her debuting daughter. Hrithik Roshan is decent in his extended special appearance.
Luck By Chance highlights how the film industry give regards to everything else but the story when making a movie and ironically weaves a fascinating story using that paradox

American Blend [mp3] Download
Around 3-4 years back, a new wave of film making started with films like 'Mitr', 'Bend It Like Beckham', 'American Desi', 'ABCD' etc. coming up in quick succession. Since the films dealt with the lives of Indians settled overseas and had a mix of 'desi' and 'videshi' feel to them, they were addressed as, for the lack of any better term, CROSSOVER films!
'AMERICAN BLEND' belongs to the same category as it tells the tale of an America based family headed by an Indian. Produced by Krishna Datla, D.Vasant Kumar and Vishwaas Paandya, 'American Blend' is directed by one film old Varun Khanna who also pens the screenplay.

Neha Dhupia hates Valentine Day
When all are gearing up to celebrate this beautiful day, Neha shocked us by saying that she hates Valentine Day. She informs that V day is just another day for her. Interestingly Neha has been dating her childhood buddy, a famous squash player Ritwik since long time.
But then what is the reason to hate such a lovely day? “I think it’s really stupid concept. I don’t understand why do we even need to celebrate that day? It’s not a festival to celebrate? I don’t see the significance of that day? No one knows who was Valentine, was he a man or priest? We still celebrate it so blindly. I am not doing it.” She reacts.
Is that the reason for not celebrating such a beautiful day? Neha recalls a funny memory related to this day. “I was very fat when I was in school I was very ugly. On every Valentines every girl used to get chocolates except me. That’s how I hate V Day.
Now all those boys must be regretting for not giving me gifts on that day.”

SRK supports Slumdog Millionaire
Many critics and prominent industry people have been fuming about the fact that the Oscar nominated film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ highlights the poverty in Mumbai.
But the baadshah of Bollywood SRK has no problems with it.
He thinks that the poverty seen in the film is a reality and thinks it’s wrong for people to become cynical when the film is getting international acclaim.
Khan, who has read the original book as well as the script says, “Isn’t that (poverty and slums) a reality? If you (critics) have a problem with the word slumdog, why don’t you look positively and see that there is a word millionaire or ‘crorepati’ also.”
Khan, has returned from Los Angeles after a month-long schedule of Karan Johar’s ‘My name is Khan’ and testified, “I have just returned from the US and people there have become crazy about the film and its music. The film’s sound is also good apart from a good story and screenplay. The film deserves all awards.”
However he doesn’t regret turning down Anil Kapoor’s role in the film.
He says maybe he wouldn’t have done justice to the role of a game show host like Anil Kapoor. He was already hosting ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ (KBC) and later ‘Kya Aap Panchvi Pass Se Tez Hai’ during the time Danny shot the film and will do the new season too.
He adds, “I love awards and I hope to feature in a film comprising Indian cast and crew some day which will go to win these awards. The success of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ worldwide is an incentive to all Indian filmmakers.”
And we always thought that the baadshah was totally in love with Bollywood only and didn’t really care about anything else. It’s nice to see him talk with an international perspective for a change! -Sampurn Media
Is A.R Rahman the reason for Delhi 6 postponement?
Our sources reveal, “Though the shooting part of the film is complete what is now left is the film’s background score which is being given by the music maestro. But Rahman being an Oscar nominee and also being busy visiting the USA for the Golden Globe Awards ceremony earlier and now with the Screen Actors Guild Awards happening there, Rahman has hardly got any time to dedicate for Delhi 6. Now with less than a month left for the announced date of release, it seems less likely that he will be able to complete it on time. Thus, the delay.”
It is not the first time, Rahman has been a reason for big ticket film’s delay. You can recollect we had earlier revealed the reasons behind Ghajini’s delayed release as well and Rahman being the reason for it. It was learnt that the preparations for releasing the film on November 28th 2008 had begun and as a first step the music of the film was to be released in mid-September. So for that Rahman had to deliver the master music track to the audio company (T-Series) in mid August. But, Rahman had clearly told them that he would require three weeks more time for the same. The makers were then left with no option but postpone the release of their film further to December 25th.Lagaan (2001) [mp3]
This is Aamir-season, so here is one more of him. Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowarikar's Lagaan started a whole new trend of film making in Bollywood that is focussed more on realism and art, than just plain mindless entertainment. This film has specially been a turning point for Aamir Khan, the result of which has been films like Rang De Basanti, Fanaa, and this year's latest and his directorial debut Taare Zameen Par. Lagaan also proved to be a significant point in the career of his co-star, Gracy Singh. She had only done minor roles in her two previous films, but Lagaan changed everything for her too. For being such an influent and great film with excellent performances and superb diection, Lagaan won 44 awards, including 8 at the Filmfare and a nomination for the Oscars.
The beautiful music of Lagaan is composed by the one and only A.R. Rehman with lyrics from Javed Akhtar. I'm seriously running out of praises for this movie. Every aspect of it is done extremely well. Enjoy the last couple of days of 2007 with these songs. I hope you all had a wonderful year, and wish you another wonderful one with full of happiness and surprises. God bless you all!

Mohabbatein (2000)
Another request from our friend Govi. Enjoy the songs guyz and galz, specially you, Govi.
Mohabbatein was one of the biggest films of 2000 (and probably is still). I guess it's the first movie that starred Shahrukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan together. Other casts includes Aishwarya and whole bunch of then-newcomers; Shamita Shetty, Uday Chopra, Jugal Hansraj, Preeti Jhangiani, Jimmy Shergill and Kim Sharma. Mohabbatein is produced by Yash Chopra and directed by his son Aditya, who recently announced that Shahrukh Khan will not appear in any of their future movies. How sad. Music is by Jatin Lalit.
Since I'm a big SRK fan, I've listened to these songs A LOT. So much that they don't interest me anymore. Just like Main Hoon Na. You be the judge for yourselves.

Aamir And Shahrukh Finally Do A Film Together!
Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan are rivals since ages now and whenever we ask them if they’d do a film with each other they give very diplomatic answers and get away. But the time has come - they are starring in the same movie.
Yes the movie is Zoya Akhtar’s directorial debut Luck By Chance which stars Farhan Akhtar and Konkona Sen Sharma in the lead roles. Hrithik also plays an important role in the film. And just as we expect sparks to fly when Shahrukh and Aamir have a face off on screen. Zoya breaks our heart saying,
“They both are playing cameos and both are far apart. One has a scene with Farhan and the other has a scene with Konkana,” says Zoya Akhtar.
King Khan is among the ‘50 Most Powerful People of the World
Needless to say he tops the list when it comes to popularity. Reportedly Khan has huge fan following from all over the world including Pakistan and Afghanistan. Other known people who have made it to the list include- US President-elect Barack Obama, who tops the list, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
Now it would be unfair to call him pompous if he calls himself the biggest brand of Bollywood.
Slumdog Millionaire, review
Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire is the film equivalent of Usain Bolt's performance at the Olympics: funny, shocking, spectacularly turbo-charged. It takes your breath away at the same time as it makes you want to holler with joy or to grab the person next to you: "Yes!"
Loosely adapted from Vikas Swarup's novel Q&A, the film is set in modern-day Mumbai. Like that city, it brims and overflows, chortles with multiplicity.
It creates a scary and beguiling electricity by allowing opposites to collide – horror and joy, colourful fantasy and grimy reality, history and hyper-modernity. It is itself many different kinds of film: thriller, romance, picaresque, a Western stab at Bollywood.
It begins with Jamal Malik (Dev Patel, from Channel 4's Skins), an 18-year-old call-centre chai-wallah, or tea-vendor, fluking his way onto the Indian version of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? Here, though uneducated, and patronised by the show's host Prem Kumar (Anil Kapoor), he gets through round after round of questions to stand on the brink of winning the top prize.
No one can believe Jamal's success, though; he represents an India obscured by recent cheerleading about that country's growing affluence and middle-class swagger. He's seen as dirty, virtually untouchable.
Kumar, in a fit of pique, has local police officers headed by Irrfan Khan torture the young man. How, they want to know, pounding and electrocuting him as they interrogate him, can an upstart like him possibly know the answers to the TV show's questions?
And so, in a piece of plotting both nimble and schematic, one that involves lots of dramatic flashbacks, Malik reveals to the officers the train of events by which he amassed all sorts of facts.
He can answer a question about film actor Amitabh Bachchan because when he was younger he had dived into a public latrine in order to get the Bollywood legend's autograph. He can answer a question about a gun inventor because he'd heard the name "Colt" mentioned as he was helping his brother Salim to rescue fellow orphan Latika from the clutches of brutal pimps.
A fragmented biography emerges: he's a shanty-town urchin, born to a mother who's later slaughtered in an anti-Muslim pogrom, and forced to hustle a living that takes him on adventures both abysmal and exciting through a society that is becoming flashier and more urban as time goes by.
The narrative structure of Slumdog Millionaire is perfect for a restless director like Boyle, allowing him to fast-forward between dramatic episodes at will, and freeing him from the need to dwell too intimately on the finer shades of characters' personalities.
He's always been a moviemaker keener to play with form and tweak with tempo than to explore the complexities of human psychology. Yet the film, which for all its breathless intensity rarely subverts our expectations, and which in its final section sticks closely to the conventions of modern action drama, never fails to grip or to delight.
It's easy to sense the excitement that Boyle – and his cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle – felt when shooting in Mumbai. They're alive to the jagged rhythms of the city, its palette of colours that are quite as rich and surreal as any in Trainspotting.
The metropolis, at once deranged, grotesque and magical, embodies all of Boyle's signature motifs – the amorality of Shallow Grave, the mob mayhem of 28 Days Later, the enchanted child's perspective of Millions – and renders them even more vivid.
As such, Slumdog Millionaire strikes me as a hugely important film in contemporary cinema. It's an advertisement for the dramatic potential of the non-Western city. Mumbai, Chennai, Shanghai, Lagos: they, not New York or Los Angeles, over-familiar and culturally declining cities both, are where any writers and directors should be heading today. They offer more energy, extremity, humanity – fillips to the imagination.
Sure, there are risks involved for those who elect to make that kind of creative migration. These days any film set in a poor or developing nation will attract scrutiny.
What we now call the Third World was patronised or ignored by moviemakers for much of the 20th century; it's no bad thing if their successors are forced to think more deeply about what they're doing.
Especially when, following the success of City of God, a cinematic sub-genre – let's call it ghetto picturesque – has developed so that, in films like the (marvellous) Bourne Ultimatum, poor neighbourhoods full of veiled women, market stalls and bearded elders feature as little more than gritty wallpaper, edgy backdrops across which hurtle maverick agents and secret-service free runners.
I've heard it said that Slumdog Millionaire itself is patronising, that it doesn't say enough about imperialism, that it prettifies suffering and poverty. To which I can only say: nonsense.
Boyle is not a political director, but his film is incalculably more radical than the glossy, blinged-out pictures that emerge every week from the studios of Mumbai. His screenwriter is Simon Beaufoy, best known for The Full Monty, also a portrait of economically ravaged underdogs trying to make a life for themselves.
Their collaboration here is a tricked-out, kinetic throwback to the crowd-pleasing, emotionally intense social dramas that India excelled at during the Fifties and Sixties, epic sagas in which young men, impelled by a hunger for justice and believing in a better future for their nation, fought against local gossips, corrupt moneylenders and predatory landlords.
Indian directors rarely make those movies these days; good on Boyle for trying to do so.
The film wouldn't be half as moving were it not for Dev Patel. He's a little hesitant and muted at first, but refines a melancholic heroism that soon becomes very winning.
We feel like whooping as his character rides on top of railway carriages, escapes from Dickensian villains about to blind young children in order to boost their begging potential, risks everything to win the love of his beloved Latika (Freida Pinto).
Slumdog Millionaire is as acerbic as it is clear-eyed about the brutal power dynamics in modern-day Mumbai. But, at the same time, what makes it so warming and what has been inspiring audiences all across the world to cheer at its rousing ending, is its passion for a place that writer Suketu Mehta has described as a "maximum city".
Mumbai has been through hell recently. But Slumdog Millionaire, whose everyman hero is a Muslim, is a wonderful tribute to it and to its people. It is, in fact, a maximum filmAsin will make relationship with Salman khan
Ghajini girl has been in news for since the time she has made her debut in Bollywood. After Ghajini she is looking forward to Vipul Shah’s London Dreams. According to a recent buzz she is in books of Salman Khan who gifted a glass doll to her on Onam.
But Asin denies the report of being overfriendly with Salman. She informs that no exchange of gifts happened on the sets. When asked about her cordial friendship with Sallu. Asin reacts, “I don’t know how to react to it because it’s absolutely false. I have not got any gifts at all from Salman.
Speaking about return gift she said, “In fact I read that he gave me a gift on Onam and I gave a return gift on Eid which is absolutely false because we were shooting from early morning to late night. Thus there was no time to buy gifts or exchange gifts.”
Being a professional Asin knows that such things are part and parcel of her profession. “When that news came out the whole unit was laughing because everyone knows what the truth is. Everyone know how we are working on this project we all are professionals.” She signs off.A R RAHMAN WILL DO US ALL PROUD
He is the man of the moment. Be it his film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ or his lilting music, A R Rahman has hit the right note ( read 3 Oscar nominations ) & is in news for all the right reasons. Will India bring home the Oscars this time ?.
Celebrity numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi analyses his numbers to find out :
Allah Rakkha Rahman was born on 6th January, 1966 which makes him a Number 6 person in numerology. Being ruled by Number 6 he is primarily ruled by Venus. His sun sign is a Capricorn ( ruler Saturn – Number 8 ) & his destiny number adds up to Number 2 ( Moon ). All people ruled by Number 2 are automatically also ruled by Number 7 ( Neptune ) and vice versa.
The year 2009 ( 2 + 0 + 0 + 9 = 11 = 1 + 1 = 2 ) which adds up to Number 2 ( Moon ) is amongst his ‘best’ numbers and no wonder the year has literally started on a ‘bang’ for Rahman.
Currently in his 44th year ( 4 + 4 = 8 ), Rahman has entered the year of Shani - a planet known for giving harsdhips, struggle, delayed success etc., but is also known for giving results - ‘chappad phaad ke’. This increases his chances of winning the ‘golden lady’ which is no mean achievement.
The 81st Academy award ceremony will be held on 22nd February, 2009 which is a day also ruled by ‘Shanidev’ ( 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 9 = 17 = 1 + 7 = 8 ). Also, Number 9 ( 8 + 1 = 9 ) is one of his strongest numbers. It seems HE is totally ‘meherbaan’ on him.
To cut it short, it is most likely that ‘RAHMAN WILL DO US ALL PROUD’. Insha-allah…!Slumdog…’ is hardly the best work of Rahman, Anil Kapoor or Irrfan Khan
‘Slumdog Millionaire’ is going to do no use to India and it is not at all an Indian Film is what he says. “It is Danny Boyle’s film and he is just using India’s finest talent to hit hard at the Oscars this year. I think the film would be very good as is being praised by many and I don’t criticize its content. But my question is, why is it that the same Indian talent is never recognized by the Oscar Jury when it independently enters the race of awards? When it is a foreign film with Indians, you honor it and when it is an Indian Film of same caliber, why not even have a look at it", asks Mahesh Bhatt.
‘Slumdog Millionaire’ might be starring Anil Kapoor and Irfaan Khan in the film, but Mahesh Bhatt doesn’t think it to be as best of their works. In fact he believes that there are much better Indian Films that they have worked in. He says, "Anil Kapoor is just playing a cameo in the film and is not in the main lead. The main leads in fact are not Indian actors even. So it is just like making hay while the sun shines for Danny Boyle, who is using the Indian effect for grabbing an Oscar."
In Delhi to promote his film ‘Raaz-The Mystery Continues’, India’s most expensive horror film till date which released yesterday worldwide, Bhatt saab very confidently said that ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ is not the best work of even A.R Rehman. “If you see his work in the past, he has produced such a quality product that it shouldn’t even take a minute to award this legend. His music in ‘Taal’, ‘Rang De Basanti’ or even ‘Lagaan’, which was nominated for the Oscars, stood nowhere in eyes of the Oscars’ Jury. However, when his music has a white connection, it comes to the priority list of the awards. Why? So is it that we Indians are incapable of making it to Oscars? Or it is just that we would be used for other’s benefit and just left unrecognized,” questions Mahesh Bhatt.
He firmly said that India is on path of yet another slavery and if others can’t respect our talent, they have no right to use us. He also said, “In my opinion, if any Indian related to this film gets the Oscar, it should not be kept in India, because we want to actually win the Oscar and not be given as an offering.”
Mahesh Bhatt who is busy promoting his film ‘Raaz The Mystery Continues’ is very confident about his film and says that “I don’t want to make any comparisons of my film with ‘Slumdog’. It may be a very nice film; however I can’t comment on it as I haven’t seen it. But yes, RTMC is what I can guarantee you is the perfect 21st century horror film. Never can a film like this in this genre be made again.”
Emraan Hashmi and Kangna Ranaut saw the first day first show of RTMC film at G3S Cinemas at Rohini in Delhi on Friday amongst the Full House audience and were mobbed for appraisals. “I am highly touched with audiences’ reaction. The other day, my daughter found a beggar on the streets of Mumbai singing ‘Maahi’, and there and then I knew that there is nothing stopping Raaz now. It is going to be a genuine hit,” signs off Bhatt. -Sampurn Media
The Salman-Katrina marriage sham
Now the news has been refuted by Salman’s father Salim Khan who was reported to have said it.
The interview was for the special supplement to commemorate Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray’s birthday on Friday. During his conversation, Salim Khan had talked about the secular values of his family and their cool attitude towards religion.
He’d said, "I mentioned how Arbaaz was married to Malaika, a Christian, Sohail to Seema, a Hindu, and Salman’s girlfriend Katrina is a Muslim."
Salim said he was misquoted by the newspaper and clarified, "The reporter has translated my comment into Marathi saying that Salman was married to Katrina. The Marathi word "jar" (if) was missing in the operative sentence, which wrongly gave the impression that the two are married"
A senior journalist with the newspaper called it a printing mistake on the condition of anonymity.
Katrina’s spokesperson termed the report as "baseless" and he said they will be sending a notice to the newspaper demanding a formal apology.
She’s said in an interview, "I definitely think that Saamna should issue a clarification if not an apology because it’s not a small thing. It’s not the news of a movie or some endorsement that one has signed. It’s a big think to make a mistake about somebody’s life like this. And I think a clarification is a must because I know for a fact that Salim sahab has definitely not said anything and one should be careful while reporting for such a major newspaper and while writing articles. My managers have spoken to the editors at ‘Saamna’ and they were assured of a corrigendum. People who read ‘Saamna’ are regulars so when they open the paper tomorrow, there should be a clarification in the paper. They should say that they were misinformed or the misprinted and that’s it. I think the matter should be ended then and there."
Katrina sure knows what she wants! It’s definitely not marriage or talks of a marriage at this point!
